They are a community-based squadron within London Wing RAFAC, parading at Albion Road in Stoke Newington. The cadets come from across the local area and represent a wide range of schools, backgrounds and ambitions. The Cadet Squadron aims to help young people develop confidence, leadership, resilience and a sense of service – while having fun and spending time with friends. This is through a variety of activities including: Classroom training towards RAFAC classifications and badges, drill and ceremonial practice, practical leadership and team-building tasks, STEM and aviation-themed activities and preparation for flying, camps and fieldcraft.

The Squadron traces its origins back to the early years of the Air Training Corps during the Second World War, when youth units were formed across the UK to support the RAF and encourage an interest in aviation and service. They celebrate their 85th Anniversary this year.Over the decades, hundreds of local young people have passed through 296, many going on to careers in the armed forces, aviation, engineering, public service and a wide range of civilian professions.

Today, 296 (Stoke Newington) Squadron continues that tradition of service: supporting civic events, remembrance parades and concerts, and working with local organisations and charities.
