Affiliations

Like many ancient City Livery Companies, the Glovers is proud to be associated with a number of armed forces affiliates, as well as others. The tradition of affiliations grew out of an ancient relationship between the City of London Livery Companies and the defence of the City and Crown.

Historically, many livery companies were not just trade guilds; they were civic institutions with responsibilities that included contributing men, equipment, and money to London's defence. From the 16th century onward, the City's militia - known as the London Trained Bands - drew heavily on members of the livery companies. Individual companies often supplied weapons, uniforms, horses, or specialist skills connected to their trade.

Those traditions evolved into links with regiments and other military units and by the 18th century, parts of the old City militia were absorbed into what became the British Army, but the civic–military relationship remained. Following the two World Wars, many Livery Companies continued these connections as a way of maintaining ties between civilian and military life and recognising military service.

Today the Glovers has a number of valued affiliations:
  • Armed Forces: HMS Artful. The Artist Rifles.
  • Cadets: 296 Squadron Air Cadets, 467 Barnet Cadets, St John Ambulance
  • Overseas Guilds: The Safran Zunft (Guild) of Basel
