The Worshipful Company of Glovers of London is a long established Livery Company with a distinguished history of philanthropy and charitable giving. Today the Company pursues an active programme of targeted support for a number of charitable causes. This support is primarily financed by annual contributions from Liverymen supplemented by legacies, fundraising initiatives and the returns from a small endowment fund. Charity Registration No. 269091.
The Company’s support for charitable causes can be summarised as building strong relationships and partnerships alongside the donation of gloves to beneficial causes. We seek to achieve these goals in the following ways:-
- Support for Homeless charities, mainly in London, often through gifts of gloves. Organisations supported include Connections at St. Martins, Shoreditch Trust, Whitechapel Mission and The Passage
- Support for charitable organisations who have an ongoing need for specialist gloves to undertake their work – for example Air Ambulance, Cancer Treatment centres and Gardening charities working with disadvantaged and vulnerable people. Organisations supported include Thrive, Thames Hospice, and London Air Ambulance.
- Educational projects and Scholarship support for choristers and students from disadvantaged backgrounds at a number of schools with close links to the City of London.
- Promoting innovative technology developments through part-funding of the provision of bionic arms and other prosthetics hands and fingers for children and adults without limbs due to accident, illness or genetics. In recent years we have worked with Open Bionics Foundation and Koalaa. This work is now broadening into public fundraising to increase the number of individuals we are able to support.
We support around 50 charities in the UK annually through our grant-making programme. Where we provide in-kind support to charities through the provision of gloves, we seek wherever possible to source these from UK based glove manufacturers, thus promoting the UK gloving industry in a small way.
All grants are made with the intention of generating positive impact – be that for individuals, the organisation we are supporting or the wider community.
