The Glovers are delighted to have created a link with the Disabled Sailors Association (DSA) and since 2021 have made donations to DSA for specialist sailing gloves.

From its south coast base DSA runs a number of sailing activities for disabled people in specially adapted yachts and dinghies with over 1000 participants on its programmes each year. DSA's principal boat for its programmes is a specially adapted catamaran, Spirit of Scott Bader, based at Port Solent which can be sailed and controlled by wheelchair users.

DSA have recently shared an extremely informative article (below) which sets out the significant benefits arising from the use of gloves donated by the Glovers company in their programmes, together with some pictures showing the gloves being put to good use on the high seas.

The Benefits of Gloves for Disabled Individuals in Sailing

Sailing is an exhilarating sport that can be enjoyed by people of all abilities, including those with disabilities. For disabled individuals engaging in sailing activities, the use of gloves brings forth a multitude of benefits, enhancing both comfort and safety during their time on the water. Here are some compelling reasons why gloves are great for disabled people when sailing:

Enhanced Grip:

Sailing often involves handling ropes, lines, and other equipment. Gloves with non-slip and grip-enhancing features, provide individuals with disabilities a secure hold, ensuring better control over the sailing apparatus.

Reduced Friction and Abrasion:

Constant handling of ropes and equipment can lead to friction and abrasion, causing discomfort and potential injury. Gloves act as a protective barrier, minimizing the impact of constant hand movements and reducing the risk of blisters or calluses.

Thermal Protection:

Sailing conditions can vary, and exposure to wind and water can lead to cold and damp hands. Gloves provide thermal insulation, keeping hands warm and comfortable, especially in cooler weather or during early morning and late evening sails.

Joint Support:

Individuals with certain disabilities may experience joint sensitivity or pain. Sailing gloves with padded palms, offer additional support, reducing the pressure on joints and making it more comfortable for individuals with arthritis or similar conditions.

Increased Comfort During Steering:

Steering a sailboat requires a firm grip on the wheel or tiller. Gloves provide cushioning and prevent blisters, allowing individuals with disabilities to enjoy the sailing experience without discomfort or pain.

Protection Against UV Rays:

Sailing often involves prolonged exposure to sunlight. Sailing gloves with UV protection not only shield the hands from harmful UV rays, but also prevent sunburn, ensuring the overall well-being of individuals with sensitive skin.

Improved Dexterity:

Specially designed sailing gloves provide a balance between protection and dexterity. Disabled individuals can maintain their agility and tactile sensitivity while benefitting from the added grip and support offered by the gloves.

Adaptive Features:

Some sailing gloves come with adaptive features, such as easy-on and easy-off designs, making them accessible for individuals with limited hand mobility. Adjustable closures and innovative materials, cater to a variety of needs.

Hygiene and Cleanliness:

Sailing environments can be challenging, with exposure to saltwater, dirt, and other elements. Gloves act as a barrier, keeping hands clean and aiding in maintaining proper hygiene, particularly for individuals with skin sensitivities.

Boosted Confidence:

Wearing gloves provides individuals with disabilities a sense of confidence and empowerment, enabling them to actively and comfortably participate in sailing activities, without concerns about hand discomfort or potential injuries.

In conclusion, gloves play a crucial role in enhancing the sailing experience for disabled individuals. By providing improved grip, protection, and comfort, gloves contribute to the overall accessibility and enjoyment of sailing, making it an inclusive and fulfilling recreational activity, for people of all abilities.
