A visit to the Royal Navy Submarine Gosport was enjoyed by the Master and Mistress accompanied by 30 fellow Glovers. We were hosted by Rear Admiral Paul Hoddinott CB, OBE, whose Naval Career spanning 34 years included three sea commands; a diesel submarine HMS Andrew the Polaris submarine HMS Revenge and the guided missile destroyer HMS Glasgow. His talk on British WW1 submarine warfare contained many interesting anecdotes including a fascinating insight to the bravery of Admiral Sir Martin Eric Dunbar-Nasmith VC, KCB, KCMG, where in his younger days he was involved in an amazing true story which illustrated his bravery and tactical genius. There will be a full report in the Yearbook but if you can’t wait I recommend Google……

After lunch the party moved onto the site of the RN Submarine Museum where we enjoyed guided tours of HMS Alliance, an A Class submarine, the only surviving example of the class. After disembarking from HMS Alliance, we were taken around Holland 1 by Rear Admiral Hoddinott. Holland 1 was the first submarine commissioned by the Royal Navy in 1901, she was lost in 1913 but recovered in 1982, restored and put on display in the museum. A truly memorable day and much enjoyed by all.
