The Plaisterers’ Hall in the City of London in July was the scene of celebrations not only for a packed room of Glovers enjoying their Livery summer luncheon in splendid surroundings but also for the five winning students of the Glovers’ Annual Student Awards.

Every year students across the UK have an opportunity to enter the competition which is to design gloves to a specific theme - this year the brief was ‘A Voyage of Discovery’ which brought out some stunning designs.

Additionally this year there was a Glove Steward’s Award, donated by David Lewis, for a made glove chosen from the Glove Making Workshops at the London College of Fashion that are sponsored by The Glovers.  The Award for the winning glove design is £1000, with runner-up prizes of £500 and £250. The Glove Steward’s Award is for £500 plus the Dents Prize of £500 awarded for the most commercial, creative and innovative design.

And the Glovers’ Silver Salver this year was awarded to: The University of Northampton - this is awarded for the College producing the best series of designs and is held for one year.

Past Master Glover John Spanner, who manages the Annual Awards said: “Yet again I am amazed at the creativity of the entrants, and their intriguing but practical designs”.

Master Glover, Mike Dodd, who has a longtime background in leather and gloves reiterated: “The amount of imagination and research the students have put into their designs mean they absolutely deserve to win. “Having said that the standard was very high this year and there were many other brilliant designs. “It was also a great pleasure to see the ‘made’ glove designs. The winner of this new category produced a beautifully cut, stitched and decorated leather glove during her time at our sponsored LCF workshop.”
